99 Rocks, Rockettes and  FORs (Friends of Rocks),
Rac, Spike and I are calling an AOM at Pensacola Beach on April 27-30, 2023.  Please circle on your calendars and we'll have more information coming in the next few months.  Here are the big picture items:
•    Dates are April 27-30, 2023
•    We're staying at the Pensacola Beach Hilton Hotel.  We've contracted for 20 rooms but can certainly grow that number if needed (currently 57 rocks/significant others) have signed up
•    The agenda will be light.  The focus is on fellowship and sea stories
o
    Friday morning casual golf (4/28). We'll be playing at Tiger Point, just a few minutes away in Gulf Breeze.  Apparently, the base course is in pretty bad shape and it's just easier to stay close.  Tiger Point has 10 sets of rental clubs and Curly has a vast supply of golf balls for us to use - there's a lot of water on the course.  Please shoot Curly a note if you're interested in golf (curlyculp@gmail.com).
    On Saturday morning (4/29), we scheduled two private, docent-led tours of the National Museum of Naval Aviation.  These take about 2+15 and we'll begin shortly after the museum opens at 9:00.  Following that, we scheduled a private catered lunch in the WestPac room, adjacent to the Cubi O' Club bar.  The restaurant will give me a few menu selections so you can make your choice prior to arriving.  I'll cover funding lunch and everyone can just pay me back through PayPal or Venmo.  Menu and pricing as we get closer.
o    Grandchild photos are permitted, but limited to 200 per couple
•    MAYBE doing an admin santa is digging into that
•    no formal dinners.
•    no shirts and no swag
•    The location is perfect to walk to nearby eateries or bars and the hotel has full service.  It's right on the beach so finding places to gather is not a problem

For now, just please be aware and mark your calendars. More info to follow. I'll stand up a Slack site in the next few months with all needed information and to make our communications easier and more efficient. Pensacola is where it all started for us and is nicely located to make travel convenient for most.  Also, please help us find a few lost souls (Dave Bryant, Scooby, Big Ed, Ron Rice, Dixie Mays, etc).  It would be great to see as many people there as possible.

Please understand that we fully support the joint Rock/Switch reunions and encourage all to attend those if desired.  They do a great job and San Diego is pretty tough to beat at any time.  We just thought a Rock AOM would be nice since it's been close to ten years since we had a Rock-only event.

That's it and remember, anyone that "replies all" to these emails will be fined $20 for each infraction and placed in hack.

Cheers,
Pyro, Rac and Spike

Subject: Interview with former F-14 pilot Sully about saving a Qantas Airbus
I'm sending this to a fewcurrent and former pilots who may find it interesting. The hero is Kevin "Sully" Sullivan, a former F-14 pilot who went through VF-124 approx 1980 and then went to VF-114. he credits Navy out-of-control training with helping him figure out how to respond to the problem!  (I thought I had more emails, but can't find them...)
A podcast series known as "Tall Tales with Taco" recently interviewed Captain Kevin "Sully" Sullivan about saving Qantas Flight 72 on Oct 7, 2008, when the Airbus A330 performed two sharp uncommanded pitch-downs that caused serious injuries. The drama didn't stop after the pitch-downs. The podcast host, Taco, was a USMC C-130 pilot.

I also recommend Sully's book, "No Man's Land." His story is an important tale of automation and AI, relevant to these times.

This Day in U S Military History…….July 22

1587 – A second English colony of 114-150 people under John White, financed by Sir Walter Raleigh, was established on Roanoke Island off North Carolina. The colony included 17 women and 9 children. Croatoan Indians informed them that Roanoke Indians had killed the men from the previous expedition. A three-year draught, the worst in 800 years, peaked during this time.

1620 – The Pilgrims set out from Holland destined for the New World. The Speedwell sailed to England from the Netherlands with members of the English Separatist congregation that had been living in Leiden, Holland. Joining the larger Mayflower at Southampton, the two ships set sail together in August, but the Speedwell soon proved unseaworthy and was abandoned at Plymouth, England. The entire company then crowded aboard the Mayflower, setting sail for North America on September 16, 1620.

1905 – Body of John Paul Jones moved to Annapolis, MD for reburial.

1953 – Major John H. Glenn, future astronaut and U.S. senator, claimed his third MiG kill in the last aerial victory of the Korean War by a Marine pilot.

1953 – First Lieutenant Sam P. Young, 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing, was credited with the final MiG kill of the Korean War.

2003 – The two sons of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Qusay Saddam Husayn (the Ace of Clubs in the deck of 52 playing cards featuring Iraq's "most wanted") and Uday Saddam Husayn (the Ace of Hearts) are trapped in a house and killed in a fire-fight with American troops from the 101st Airborne Division. Supporting this action were two OH-58 Kiowa helicopters from Company D, 1st Battalion, 159th Aviation from the Mississippi Army Guard which flew top cover to be sure no one escaped from the building. After an initial ground assault against the building resulted in three American soldiers being wounded, the 101st called for air support. So the two Guard copters worked the house over with 2.75-inch rockets, Mark 19 grenades, AT-4 rockets and .50 caliber machine gun fire. Still fire came back from the defenders until finally the infantry killed everyone inside with 10 TOW missiles. Sheik Nawaf al-Zaydan Muhhamad informed US troops of their presence in his home and became $30 million richer.

*LOBAUGH, DONALD R.
Rank and organization: Private, U .S. Army, 127th Infantry, 32d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Afua, New Guinea, 22 July 1944. Entered service at: Freeport, Pa. Birth: Freeport, Pa. G.O. No.: 31, 17 April 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty near Afua, New Guinea, on 22 July 1944. While Pvt. Lobaugh's company was withdrawing from its position on 21 July, the enemy attacked and cut off approximately 1 platoon of our troops. The platoon immediately occupied, organized, and defended a position, which it held throughout the night. Early on 22 July, an attempt was made to effect its withdrawal, but during the preparation therefor, the enemy emplaced a machinegun, protected by the fire of rifles and automatic weapons, which blocked the only route over which the platoon could move. Knowing that it was the key to the enemy position, Pfc. Lobaugh volunteered to attempt to destroy this weapon, even though in order to reach it he would be forced to work his way about 30 yards over ground devoid of cover. When part way across this open space he threw a hand grenade, but exposed himself in the act and was wounded. Heedless of his wound, he boldly rushed the emplacement, firing as he advanced. The enemy concentrated their fire on him, and he was struck repeatedly, but he continued his attack and killed 2 more before he was himself slain. Pfc. Lobaugh's heroic actions inspired his comrades to press the attack, and to drive the enemy from the position with heavy losses. His fighting determination and intrepidity in battle exemplify the highest traditions of the U.S. Armed Forces.

*MASON, LEONARD FOSTER
Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps. Born: 2 February 1920, Middleborough, Ky. Accredited to: Ohio. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as an automatic rifleman serving with the 2d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Marianas Islands on 22 July 1944. Suddenly taken under fire by 2 enemy machineguns not more than 15 yards away while clearing out hostile positions holding up the advance of his platoon through a narrow gully, Pfc. Mason, alone and entirely on his own initiative, climbed out of the gully and moved parallel to it toward the rear of the enemy position. Although fired upon immediately by hostile riflemen from a higher position and wounded repeatedly in the arm and shoulder, Pfc. Mason grimly pressed forward and had just reached his objective when hit again by a burst of enemy machinegun fire, causing a critical wound to which he later succumbed. With valiant disregard for his own peril, he persevered, clearing out the hostile position, killing 5 Japanese, wounding another and then rejoining his platoon to report the results of his action before consenting to be evacuated. His exceptionally heroic act in the face of almost certain death enabled his platoon to accomplish its mission and reflects the highest credit upon Pfc. Mason and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

SKAGGS, LUTHER, JR.
Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division. Place and date: Asan-Adelup beachhead, Guam, Marianas Islands, 21 -22 July 1944. Entered service at: Kentucky. Born: 3 March 1923, Henderson, Ky. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as squad leader with a mortar section of a rifle company in the 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup beachhead, Guam, Marianas Islands, 21 -22 July 1944. When the section leader became a casualty under a heavy mortar barrage shortly after landing, Pfc. Skaggs promptly assumed command and led the section through intense fire for a distance of 200 yards to a position from which to deliver effective coverage of the assault on a strategic cliff. Valiantly defending this vital position against strong enemy counterattacks during the night, Pfc. Skaggs was critically wounded when a Japanese grenade lodged in his foxhole and exploded, shattering the lower part of one leg. Quick to act, he applied an improvised tourniquet and, while propped up in his foxhole, gallantly returned the enemy's fire with his rifle and handgrenades for a period of 8 hours, later crawling unassisted to the rear to continue the fight until the Japanese had been annihilated. Uncomplaining and calm throughout this critical period, Pfc. Skaggs served as a heroic example of courage and fortitude to other wounded men and, by his courageous leadership and inspiring devotion to duty, upheld the high traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

This is the most comprehensive list of the scum that have fomented the destruction of our democracy!
Agree?
by Frank Hawkins -  US Army Retired Intelligence Officer.

America has undergone enormous change during the nearly eight decades of my life.  Today, America is a bitterly divided, poorly educated, and morally fragile society with so-called mainstream politicians pushing cynical identity politics, socialism, and open borders  The past president of the United States was impeached twice and acquitted twice because the other side doesn't like him.  The once reasonably unbiased American media has evolved into a hysterical left-wing mob.

How could the stable and reasonably cohesive America of the 1950s have reached this point in just one lifetime?  Who are the main culprits?  Here's my list of the 10 most destructive Americans of the last 70 years.

10) Mark Felt – Deputy director of the FBI, aka "Deep Throat" during the Watergate scandal.  This was the first public instance of a senior FBI official directly interfering in America's political affairs.  He was the forerunner of James Comey, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page,
and Andrew McCabe.

9) Bill Ayers – Represents the deep and ongoing leftist ideological damage to our education system.  An unrepentant American terrorist who evaded punishment, he devoted his career to radicalizing American education and pushing leftist causes.  Ghost-wrote Obama's book, "Dreams From My Father."

8) Teddy Kennedy – Most folks remember Teddy as the guy who left Mary Joe Kopechne to die in his car at Chappaquiddick.  The real damage came after he avoided punishment for her death and became a major Democrat force in the US Senate, pushing through transformative liberal policies in health care and education.  The real damage was the 1965 Hart-Cellar immigration bill he pushed hard for that changed the quota system to increase the flow of third-world people without skills into the US and essentially ended large-scale immigration from Europe.

7) Walter Cronkite – Cronkite was a much-beloved network anchor who began the politicization of America's news media with his infamous broadcast from Vietnam that described the Tet Offensive as a major victory for the Communists and significantly turned the gullible American public against the Vietnam War.  In fact, the Tet offensive was a military disaster for the NVA and Viet Cong, later admitted by North Vietnamese military leaders.  Decades later Cronkite admitted he got the story wrong.  But it was too late.  The damage was done.

6) Bill and Hillary Clinton -- It's difficult to separate Team Clinton.  Bill's presidency was largely benign as he was a relative fiscal conservative who rode the remaining benefits of the Reagan era.  But his sexual exploits badly stained the Oval Office and negatively affected America's perception of the presidency.  In exchange for financial support, he facilitated the transfer of sensitive military technology to the Chinese.
Hillary, a Saul Alinsky acolyte, is one of the most vicious politicians of my lifetime, covering up Bill's sexual assaults by harassing and insulting the exploited women and peddling influence around the globe in exchange for funds for the corrupt Clinton Foundation.  She signed off on the sale of 20% of the US uranium reserve to the Russians after Bill received a $500,000 speaking fee in Moscow and the Foundation (which supported the Clinton's regal lifestyle) received hundreds of millions of dollars from those who benefited from the deal.  Between them, they killed any honor that might have existed in the dark halls of DC.

5) Valerie Jarrett - The Rasputin of the Obama administration.  A Red Diaper baby, her father, maternal grandfather, and father-in-law (Vernon Jarrett who was a close friend and ally of Obama mentor Frank Marshall Davis) were hardcore Communists under investigation by the U.S. government.  She has been in Obama's ear for his entire political career pushing a strong anti-American, Islamist, anti-Israeli, socialist/communist, cling-to-power agenda.

4) Jimmy Carter - Carter ignited modern-day radical Islam by abandoning the Shah and paving the way for Ayatollah Khomeini to take power in Tehran.  Iran subsequently became the main state sponsor and promoter of international Islamic terrorism.  When Islamists took over our embassy in Tehran, Carter was too weak to effectively respond thus strengthening the rule of the radical Islamic mullahs.

3) Lyndon Johnson – Johnson turned the Vietnam conflict into a major war for America.  It could have ended early if he had listened to the generals instead of automaker Robert McNamara.  The ultimate result was this:
  A) 58,000 American military deaths and collaterally tens of thousands of American lives damaged;
  B) a war that badly divided America and created left-wing groups that evaded the draft and eventually gained control of our education system.

Even worse, his so-called War on Poverty led to the destruction of American black families with a significant escalation of welfare and policies designed to keep poor families dependent on the government (and voting Democrat) for their well-being  He deliberately created a racial holocaust that is still burning today.  A strong case could be made for putting him at the top of this list.

2) Barack Hussein Obama - Obama set up America for a final defeat and stealth conversion from a free-market society to socialism/communism.  As we got deeper into the Trump presidency, we learned more and more about how Obama politicized and compromised key government agencies, most prominently the FBI, the CIA, and the IRS, thus thoroughly shaking the public's confidence in the federal government to be fair and unbiased in its activities.  He significantly set back race relations between Americans by stoking black grievances and pushing radical identity politics.  Obama's open support for the Iranian mullahs and his apologetic "lead from behind" foreign policy seriously weakened America abroad.  His blatant attempt to interfere in Israel's election by trying to unseat Netanyahu is one of the most shameful things ever done by an American president.

1)  The Number 1 Worst American is John Kerry – Some readers will likely say Kerry does not deserve to be number one on this list.  I have him here because I regard him as the most despicable American who ever lived.  After his three faked Purple Hearts during his cowardly service in Vietnam, he was able to leave the US Navy early.  As a reserve naval officer and in clear violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, he traveled to Paris and met privately with the NVA and the Viet Cong.  He returned to the United States parroting the Soviet party line about the war and testified before Congress comparing American soldiers to the hordes of Genghis Khan.  It was a clear case of TREASON, giving aid and comfort to the enemy in a time of war.  We got a second bite of the bitter Kerry apple when as Obama's secretary of state, he fell into bed with the Iranian ("Death to America") mullahs, giving them the ultimate green light to develop nuclear weapons along with giving them billions of dollars that further supported their terrorist activities.  Only the heroic Swift Vets saved us from a Manchurian Candidate Kerry's presidency.  Ultimately we got Obama.

Dishonorable Mentions!  (Just missed the list)

John Brennan  – Obama's CIA director who once voted for Communist Gus Hall for president.  A key member of the Deep State who severely politicized the CIA.  Called President Trump treasonous for meeting with the president of Russia.

Jane Fonda  – a movie actress who made the infamous trip to Vietnam during the war, in support of the Communists.  She represents hard-left Hollywood that has done so much damage to our culture.

Robert Johnson  – As head of Black Entertainment Television he helped popularize ho's, bitches, and pimps while making millions on great hits such as "Jigga my Nigga", "Big Pimpin'", "Niggas in Paris" and, "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z."  Many scholars within the African-American community maintain that BET perpetuates and justifies racism by adopting the stereotypes held about African- Americans, affecting the psyche of young viewers through the bombardment of negative images of African-Americans  Who can disagree?

Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr.  – Head of the New York Times.  Once the gold standard of American journalism, the paper always had a liberal tilt and occasionally made bad mistakes.  As the years have gone along, the paper has slid further and further left and today is virtually the primary propaganda arm of the increasingly radical Democrat Party.  Still retains influence in Washington and New York.

Frank Marshall Davis - Anti-white, black Bolshevik, card-carrying Soviet agent.  Probable birth father and admitted primary mentor of young Barack Hussein Obama.

A special Reward goes to George Soros – An anti-Semitic Jew and former Nazi collaborator in his native Hungary who is a self-made billionaire. George Soros is an evil man!  He has ruined countries with his monetary trading.  He has also poured hundreds of millions of dollars into left-wing groups and causes.  The damage he has caused is difficult to measure, but it's certainly large.  He funded much of the effort to kill the Trump presidency.

Let's not forget that recently removed San Francisco DA Chesa Boudine was raised by Bill Ayers & wife because his mother and father were both in prison for the murder of two Brinks guards and were members of the Weather Underground! And now an even worse DA

USA—Deal Signed With Netherlands To Work Together On Aviation Programs Defense News | 07/22/2022 The U.S. and Dutch militaries have signed an agreement to work together on future helicopter projects, reports Defense News. The sides signed the pact formalizing cooperation on aviation modernization on Wednesday at Gilze-Rijen Air Force Base in the southern Netherlands. The U.S. Army is pursuing the Future Vertical Lift (FVL) program to modernize its aviation capabilities, which covers the Future Long-Range Attack (FLRAA), Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA), Future Unmanned Aerial Systems and other projects. The new agreement will allow U.S. and Dutch officials to discuss concepts, technologies and requirements at more sensitive levels, said Maj. Gen. Walter Rugen, director of the FVL Cross-Functional Team at U.S. Army Futures Command. The accord comes as NATO countries look to replace their own aging helicopter fleets, with the goal of retiring the current generation by 2035. Last month, the Netherlands signed a memorandum of understanding with Italy, Germany, Greece and the U.K. to commit US$28 million for the Next-Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) project.

USA—L3Harris Wins Missionization Work For Coast Guard C-130Js U.S. Coast Guard | 07/22/2022 The U.S. Coast Guard says it has awarded L3Harris a contract to install mission systems on up to six C-130J Super Hercules long-range surveillance aircraft. The $147 million contract covers the production, installation and delivery of the Minotaur mission system suite and Block 8.1 upgrade for the 17th and 18th C-130J aircraft ordered by the Coast Guard. The deal includes options to missionize aircraft 19 to 22, which will have the Block 8.1 upgrade installed by Lockheed Martin during baseline production, the service said in a Wednesday release. The Minotaur mission system incorporates sensors, radar and command, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C5ISR) equipment needed for Coast Guard missions and provides increased processing speed and memory capacity.  The Block 8.1 upgrade features an enhanced intercom system, enhanced approach and landing systems, expanded diagnostics, civil GPS and additional covert lighting.

Ukraine—Grain Export Deal With Russia Anticipated Euronews | 07/22/2022 Russia and Ukraine are scheduled to sign an agreement that would enable Kyiv to export grain and other agricultural products from its Black Sea ports, which have been blockaded by Russian warships since Moscow launched its unprovoked invasion in February, reports Euronews (France). The deal, brokered by Turkey and the U.N., is expected to be formalized during a ceremony on Friday at the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to derail any accord, saying that he expected it to also address blocked Russian grain exports. On Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the European Union and U.S. had committed to ease restrictions related to Russian grain exports. A member of the Ukrainian delegation said that exports would be permitted through three ports under Kyiv's control: Odesa, Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk. The safety of the shipments would be overseen by a U.N. monitoring group in Istanbul.

Libya—At Least 5 Killed In Tripoli Clashes Reuters | 07/22/2022 At least five people have been killed in clashes between rival Libyan factions in Tripoli, reports Reuters. Early Friday, heavy fighting broke out between factions in several parts of the city. Clashes were reported in the central district near the Radisson Blu hotel, an area where several government and international agencies and diplomatic missions are based, while military vehicles were seen in the Zawiyat Dahmani suburb. Witnesses also reported fighting in the Asbaa area and in Ain Zara.  Tensions have been high in Libya since the parliament based in eastern Libya rejected the unity government appointed last year through a U.N.-backed process and named a rival administration. Both prime ministers have support among armed groups in Tripoli and other cities in western Libya.

Libya—E.U. Mission Seizes Ship Carrying Illegal Cargo EUNAVFOR | 07/22/2022 The European Union naval mission in the Mediterranean Sea has seized a cargo vessel suspected of carrying arms to Libya in violation of a U.N. embargo, reports the E.U. Naval Force Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED). On Monday, the Italian frigate Grecale conducted an inspection of MV Victory Roro off the coast of Libya. The ship, flying under the Equatorial Guinean flag, has long been suspected of illegally transporting military equipment to Libya. The U.N. panel of experts identified the ship, then operating as the MV Luccello under the flag of Comoros, as having delivered military vehicles to Libya as early as March 2022. During the inspection, the Victory Roro was found carrying dozens of vehicles designed or modified for military missions and assessed to be in violation of the U.N. arms embargo. Accordingly, the E.U. Operation Irini seized the vehicles and diverted the cargo ship to an unspecified European port for further proceedings. The search and seizure of the MV Victory Roro was the 24th inspection by Operation Irini since it began in March 2020, said EUNAVFOR.

Somalia—17 Die In Al-Shabaab Assaults In Southwest Hiiraan Online | 07/22/2022 Al-Shabaab fighters attacked villages in southwestern Somalia, killing more than a dozen people, reports the Hiiraan Online (Ottawa, Canada). On Wednesday, militants attacked the villages of Aato and Yeed in the Bakool region near the border with Ethiopia. Three civilians and 14 Ethiopian police officers in Somali territory were killed, while 63 Al-Shabaab fighters died, said an Ethiopian security commander at the scene, as reported by Reuters. The attack came days after an Al-Shabaab commander was killed in Ethiopia while trying to create a unit there, the commander said. An Al-Shabaab spokesman claimed that the group had captured both villages and killed dozens of Ethiopian police officers and stole their weapons. He did not comment on Al-Shabaab losses.

Sudan—Death Toll Rises In Recent Ethnic Violence In Blue Nile State Agence France-Presse | 07/22/2022 Scores of people were killed and injured in recent ethnic clashes in southern Sudan, according to the latest government figures cited by Agence France-Presse. The Berti and Hausa ethnic groups fought on July 11 in Blue Nile state. On July 16, Sudanese troops were deployed to the region to stop the fighting and "the situation is now calm," Health Minister Jamal Nasser said on Wednesday. At least 105 people were killed and 291 wounded in the fighting, said Nasser. Hausa leaders said the figure was expected to rise, since there were still bodies trapped under rubble. The leaders also accused the governor of responsibility for the fighting, saying government weapons were used by the Berti. The Hausa said the clashes started after Bertis rejected a Hausa request to create a "civil authority to supervise access to land." For their part, the Berti said that they were responding to a "violation" of their land by the Hausa. Around 17,000 people were forced to flee their homes during the fighting, said the U.N.

It also includes Joint Mission Planning System (JMPS) software; classified software support for electronic warfare self-protection; aircraft and engine support equipment, components, consumables, spare parts and repair/return; publications and technical documentation; heavy maintenance support; participation in the C-17 Virtual Fleet for Total System Sustainment (TSS) contractor logistics support and Material Improvement Program (MIP); and other U.S. government-related services. The renewal of sustainment support for the C-17s would enhance the U.A.E's defense capability, support strategic and humanitarian airlift and bolster interoperability with the U.S., the agency said. Boeing would be the prime contractor under a final contract.
