FBI, European Authorities Disrupt Ransomware Gang

The U.S. Dept. of Justice says it has disrupted a ransomware gang in cooperation with Europol, reports the Bleeping Computer website.
On Thursday, the department said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Europol began the operation in July 2022, infiltrating the Hive gang's infrastructure.
The operation allowed authorities to learn about attacks before they took place and warn targets, and obtain and distribute decryption keys to victims, preventing around US$130 million in ransom payments.
U.S. and Dutch law enforcement also seized the gang's Tor payment and data leak sites.
Lockheed Fires Laser Defense System For 1st Time

Lockheed Martin has announced the first light milestone for its new laser air defense system.
The 50-kW Directed Energy Interceptor for Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense System (DEIMOS) verified that its optical performance aligned with the system design parameters during the demonstration, the company said in a release earlier this week.
The tactical laser weapon system is intended for the Army's Stryker wheeled combat vehicle, providing a directed energy capability for its short-range air defense mission.
DEIMOS is intended to be a part of the Army's planned layered laser defense architecture and can defeat uncrewed aerial systems, helicopters and rockets, artillery and mortars.
Lockheed To Produce New F-35 Test Aircraft

The Naval Air Systems Command has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract modification for the F-35 stealth fighter program, reports the Dept. of Defense.
The $320 million modification adds scope to existing contracts and covers the production of new flight science test aircraft for the program
Under the award, Lockheed will produce one F-35A, one F-35B and one F-35C to replace aging flight science test aircraft.
Work is scheduled to be completed by December 2027.
New Abrams Tanks To Be Purchased For Kyiv

The Pentagon says that it does not have any excess tanks to send to Ukraine, reports Stars and Stripes.
On Thursday, officials said that there were no M1A2 Abrams tanks on hand to send to Ukraine.
The Biden administration has pledged to send 31 Abrams tanks and a few recovery vehicles to bolster the Ukrainian army.
These tanks will have to be purchased, pushing back when they might arrive in Ukraine.
Experts estimate that the Abrams may not be delivered until late 2023 or early 2024.

Argentina has begun the process to buy wheeled armored vehicles from Brazil, reports MercoPress (Uruguay).
Earlier this week, Argentinean Defense Minister Jorge Taiana and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira signed a letter of intent to begin negotiations for the procurement of 156 Guarani 6 x 6 armored vehicles.
The proposed purchase would included 120 personnel carrier variants with a machine gun turret; 27 infantry combat vehicles with an autocannon' and nine command-post vehicles.
4 Leopard 2 Tanks To Be Sent To Ukraine

The Canadian government has decided to send four of its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, reports the Globe and Mail (Toronto).
Defense Minister Anita Anand said the donation balances support for the Ukraine war effort with Canadian readiness requirements and NATO responsibilities.
According to a retired Canadian official, only 20 of Canada's 112 Leopard 2 tanks are operational.
The announcement comes after Germany said on Wednesday that it would provide Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and encourage other operators of the German tank to do the same.
President Rules Out Donating Russian Equipment To Ukraine

President Gustavo Petro says Colombia will not donate Russian-origin military equipment to Ukraine, reports Telesur (Caracas, Venezuela).
Petro made his remarks after U.S. Southern Command chief Gen. Laura Richardson suggested that Colombia could send Russian-made weapons to Kyiv.
In return, the U.S. could supply more advanced systems to replace the donated equipment, Richardson said.
Petro categorically rejected the suggestion, saying that he would "prefer the old Russian weapons remain as scrap on Colombian land than give them to Ukraine."
He also cited the Colombian constitution, which prohibits the promotion of armed conflicts.
Defense Minister Calls For Conscription Of Women

Two Philippine air force pilots have died in a training crash, reports Benar News (Washington, D.C.).
The Marchetti SF-260TP turboprop went down in the northern Bataan region on Wednesday during a recurrency training flight, reported the official Philippine News Agency.
The aircraft belonged to the 15th Strike Wing based at Major Danilo Atienza Air Base in Sangley Point, Cavite.
The air force has grounded its SF-260 fleet while the crash is investigated.

On Thursday, troops launched a raid on a cave complex where Islamic State leader Bilal al-Sudani was hiding.
Al-Sudani played a key operational and financial role within ISIS, making him an important target for U.S. counterterrorism action, said U.S. officials.
Another 10 ISIS militants were killed in the fighting.
No U.S. casualties were reported.
ARES Shipyard Unveils New Interceptor Craft

ARES Shipyard in Turkey has debuted two new models of its 105-foot (32-m) interceptor boats, reports the company.
On Tuesday, the shipyard unveiled the Predator and Dagger variants of the ARES 32 interceptors.
The Predator is armed with Roketsan's new Cakir cruise missiles, with a range of more than 90 miles (150 km), while Dagger has two quad-cell infrared/laser-guided missile launchers with shorter range.
Both variants are equipped with a 25-mm or 30-mm remote weapons system and two 12.7-mm remote-controlled auto-stabilized machine guns.
The boats are also upgraded with advanced combat management systems, electro-optic surveillance, S- and X-Band radars and a rigid-hull inflatable boat that can be deployed from a ramp on the aft deck.
